     Introduction

In 1987, the State Key Laboratory for Surface Physics (SKLSP), as one of the first ten state key laboratories, was founded under the auspices of The State Development Planning Commission of China. By both experimental and theoretical approaches, research in SKLSP is focused primarily on fundamental physical and chemical properties and solid state phenomena, such as chemical composition, atomic/electronic structure, vibration, adsorption/desorption, phase transition, dynamic and kinetic growth processes and quantum effects, that are determined by surfaces, interfaces, or low-dimensional/nanostructured forms of condensed matters. The mission is to provide the necessary information for creating improved and novel functional materials and device structures that can find applications in microelectronics, optoelectronics, information technology, energy resources and other important areas.

SKLSP currently has a total of 30 permanent staff (11 professors), and is divided into seven research groups (one theoretical group and six experimental groups). In addition, 93 full-time graduate students and 3 postdoc research fellows are working in the laboratory. A group of 40 distinguished scientists forms the academic steering committee supervising and judging performance, and justifying research directions and adjustment to assure a best operation of SKLSP.

SKLSP is equipped with (and has been developing) two powerful computer workstations for theoretical research as well as advanced and unique state-of-the-art experimental facilities, which are used for preparation and characterization of various thin film, low-dimensional systems and nano-structures, as described in our on-going projects. In addition, these facilities are also open to scientists outside to carry out the collaboration programs approved by SKLSP.
